Quote of The Day

“Twenty years of learning my craft, hours of practice each day and NOW they call me gifted!!

In this week’s blog, I am going to shift away from my usual style of post and write an opinion piece. (Like your Mother always did, I do have an ulterior motive for this, as you will discover). It was a sad day last week when we heard of the passing of Steve Jobs, one of the technological geniuses of our time. In my own world, and 30 years of experience in the music business, I started to think about how technology has changed the way we do things in the recording studio. The most glaring shift has been the change over from analogue recording to digital recording. Okay, here’s where the rant starts…

How many times in the studio in the last ten years have I heard a producer or singer (and sometimes I use that term loosely) declare, “let’s just auto-tune it”. AHHHHHHH!!! This drives me insane. Why? If you can’t nail the note in the studio, you shouldn’t be there yet. Don’t get me wrong, using auto-tune once or twice to correct a note’s pitch in order to keep the emotional value of the line is a brilliant use of the tool, however, using it to get a decent or passable overall vocal track from a singer who can’t really sing well yet is a travesty. Once released to the world and the record “hits” (okay, can you tell what era I’m from?) garnering a million fans through social media connections who are demanding live performances in their town where gazillions in merchandise can be sold, what happens then? Yes, lip-synching a la Milli Vanilli is an option, until you are busted. Also, no one ever wants to hear “the album is way better – those guys suck live” from a fan as they are walking away from the concert. So, here’s the Motherly advice I eluded to near the top of the post. Learning to sing well with great technique and awareness will not only WOW your live audience, but also give an authenticity to your recording that no one will ever dispute. Do the work and reap the rewards!!!

Until next time… Breathe and Happy Singing!
