Quote Of The Day:

“A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”

Bob Dylan

Recently I had the honour and privilege of being the vocal coach on faculty for the Peak Performance Boot Camp 2012 in Princeton BC. For those of you who are unaware of what this is, it is a contest supported by Music BC and a very progressive, Canadian talent supporting, AAA format radio station here in Vancouver, called The Peak 102.7 FM. After making it through the audition process adjudicated by a panel of industry professionals, twenty emerging and original artists received an intensive, one week training program in music business, live performance, songwriting, recording, marketing and promotion. The prizes are nothing to sneeze at, with $100,000.00 going to the first place winner of the contest after a concert series and online voting campaign.

To refer to the above quote, the participants were at a summer camp environment where they ate, slept and breathed music for the entire week (every bands’ dream – right?). Firsthand I witnessed the magic created through the interaction and collaborations of all this burgeoning talent. To say the least, it was a very powerful experience resulting in great music, new friendships and creative bonds.

One of the main reasons I am sharing this experience with you is to make you aware of, and encourage you to, seek out similar contests in your own communities. The big theme of the week at Boot Camp was “no one is going to do it for you so you need to learn how to do it for yourself”. A truer statement has never been spoken. As this crazy business of music is ever changing, staying on top of how it is evolving by attending whatever informative sessions you can,  going to music industry events, or entering such contests with benefits like these, will give you an edge over others in the music industry who are hoping that it will just “happen”. Chances are you have the talent to succeed in the music business, but do you have the knowledge of how to go about reaching your career goals? Make it happen. Get out there and gig, become members of musical communities, network, and learn from each other. It’s an amazing, challenging, and most times, rewarding journey if you put the effort into your own success.

Until next time… Breathe and Happy Singing!
