Quote Of The Day:
“I don’t sing because I think I’m good, I sing because it feels good”
Jann Arden
I may not have quoted that exactly how it was said, but I remember driving in my car about 15 years ago and heard Jann Arden say that on a radio interview with Peter Gzowski. He was always enamoured with Jann and had commented that during sound check for his radio show she sang with the same amount of emotion that she sings with in concert. The quote above, (or something very close to it) was her reply. That has stuck with me all these years and I often use it in my vocal coaching. Why do we sing? We sing because it feels fantastic. It is a freedom and an expression that every human should have the right to feel. Luckily in my world I get a chance to observe small children singing their hearts out like no one is listening. As children get older, they become more self-conscious about themselves and don’t sing as freely as they did when they were younger. By the time we get to adulthood, we’ve often given up our love of singing because somewhere along our road of life someone we loved or held in high esteem said something to make us self-conscious about our voice or told us “just don’t sing”. What a travesty. If you read last week’s blog, I made a bold statement that I believe everyone can sing, or at the very least, learn to become a better singer through the most basic training of breathing and diaphragm support. Those of you who love to sing know who you are. If you are self conscious about it, find a good teacher and take some lessons. If you are unable to do that, then crank up the tunes in your car and sing along or make your daily shower your stage and let the tunes come out with all the heart and soul you can muster. I guarantee it will be a great way to start your day!
Until next time… Breathe and Happy Singing!
