Quote Of The Day
“Only when I’m dancing can I feel this free.”
― Madonna
A few weeks back Madonna performed as the Super Bowl’s half time entertainment. In true Madonna form, it was a spectacle and the powers that be pulled off an amazing feat under restrictive circumstances. You have to be a real pro to be able to perform under that kind of pressure with the time constraints, staging issues and potential “wardrobe malfunctions” while millions of people are watching.
Although there was no skin bared that wasn’t supposed to be, I noticed a few weird things that happened when the Material Girl was moving about the stage. At times her dance moves didn’t look that confident which really surprised me. I started thinking what could possibly be the reason for that. Is she ill? Did she throw her back out the day before? Or maybe she forgot to go to the bathroom before she arrived in her golden chariot. At one point while climbing up onto the bleachers, it looked like Madonna lost her footing and almost fell. This is when I wondered if she actually got to rehearse in her outfits and footwear on the stage where she was to perform the big event.
This is a pretty important thing for any performer to do before a big show. I like to call it “Test Driving Your Outfit”. At times it really looked like the stage was slippery or that she had never worn those boots to dance in before. On many of the big television shows I have had the privilege of performing on over the years we always had a dress rehearsal to line up camera shots, make sure the lighting and sets worked with our wardrobe choices and we got to get a feel if anything felt restrictive or could compromise our performance. I’d like to think that Madonna got the same courtesy. But, as we know with something that big, she may not have had the opportunity to actually work the stage in her outfits and footwear before the big event. Maybe that is why her performance felt hesitant and not that smooth.
I guess the moral to this observation is: if you are wearing something fabulous for your next big gig, be sure that you test drive it in a rehearsal on the stage you will be performing on if possible. This will help you give the best performance you can and not be worrying about splitting your crotch seam open in front of an audience when you do your double hoo ha jump up onto the speaker stacks risking your very own “wardrobe malfunction” and major embarrassment.
Until next time… Breathe, (test drive your outfit) and Happy Singing!
