Quote Of The Day:
“She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love”
-Van Morrison
Have you ever thought about how many times the word “love” is sung in popular music? In the above quoted Van Morrison song, “Crazy Love”, the word “love”, or a derivative of it , appears 37 times. Although it appears to be a fairly easy word to sing, it still needs a little tweaking in the vowel modification department. Say the word “love”. Your mouth doesn’t open up very big when saying it. This creates a slight tension and makes it difficult to enable this word and the note it is associated with, to float out easily, which is what we want to achieve as singers. The vowel sound on “love” will get progressively more difficult to sing as you ascend in your vocal range towards your “Diva” or “Rockstar” Placements where you are singing with power at the top end of your full voice range.
There is a simple solution to modifying this vowel to make it easier to sing. Remember the general rule of thumb in modifying vowels is to drop your jaw. For this particular word, I always think “lahv”, (remember you “think” this phonetic variation, but still “sing” the actual word thus creating a physical openness for the word to float out on.) Say it in this phonetic way, “lahv”. See how your jaw drops, the tone “pops” out more forward, and it feels easier to sing. If you can get into the habit of dropping your jaw on most vowels, you will be amazed at how much easier, and often, less vocally fatigued you will feel after singing for a set or two. (Provided you are breathing correctly and using appropriate diaphragm support).
So go ahead and sing “Crazy Love” with the word “love” appearing 37 times. I guarantee you will “love” how easy it is and how effortless it feels.
Until next time… Breathe and Happy Singing!
